robyn reviews… NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams

I’m no beauty guru, but I do like to slap lots of stuff on my face on a daily basis in an attempt to fool people into thinking I’m more attractive than I really am (or at least so as not to scare small children) I’ve come across some staple products in my time, but never one that’s lip-related… until this year. This year, my absolute make-up must-have is without a doubt the Soft Matte Lip Cream from NYX.

Available in 34 shades (and each one named after a capital city), these creams are gloss-like in application but all lipstick in finish, drying to a marvellously pigmented matte after only a couple of minutes. They’re long-lasting for all day colour and aren’t drying, so you don’t have to worry about the dreaded lip cracks.

I only own 9 of the colours, but I think these 9 adequately cover the spectrum of necessary day-to-night lip looks.

So what do they look like on? Well look no further – I’ve picked my faves and showcased them via varying degrees of pouting.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Rome

Dusky rose, mauve, a touch of brown… it’s difficult to describe this shade but it’s become my go-to. It glides on opaque and smooth and dries to give you a bold lip colour that’s perfect to take you from day to night.

One of the more highly pigmented shades, you could get away with only one coat of this and the colour would still pack a punch. More of a deep coral than a fuchsia pink, I find it brightens your face rather than washes you out, and it’s particularly comfortable on the lips.

I didn’t immediately love this one – it doesn’t go on so smoothly and requires quite a lot of layering to build up a decent colour. I reckon it works better if your foundation base is strong (with bronzer to boot) but once you’ve found a way to make it work it’s a really lovely, subtle nude.

As red as those window lights of its namesake, Amsterdam provides the statement red lip that everyone should be able to rock. It doesn’t bleed and has some serious staying power, so it survives food, drink and woesome weather alike.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Cannes, as not only was it the first lip cream I tried (thus starting off the obsession) but it was also the first NYX product I purchased. It’s the perfect daytime shade,  and its slightly pinky undertones mean that it’s a bit more pigmented than the other nudes.

While there are certainly some shades I wear more readily than others, and though my collection is far from complete, I would like to state with authority and without melodrama that the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream is LIFE-CHANGING and absolutely essential in every make-up bag/coat pocket/little zip compartment of a clutch bag.
